PROGRAMMED SURFACE
2003
Installation, variable size (approx. 2 × 3 × 2.2 m)
with Mark Ottinger
Programmed Surface is a 1:1 furniture prototype responding to the evolving needs of urban nomads. Developed in the context of Hotel Europe, the installation explores transitional space as both a conceptual and functional environment for contemporary forms of dwelling.
The work unfolds as a compact system of interfaces—folds, pockets, and compartments—integrated into a multifunctional surface that supports rest, shelter, and basic living needs. It proposes an adaptable structure for individuals navigating shifting urban conditions.
Addressing fluid geographies, the project reflects on how space, identity, and movement are increasingly dynamic and non-linear, particularly in relation to migration, globalization, and mobile lifestyles.
Materially, the work is grounded in the use of recyclable, low-impact materials such as wood and cotton textiles. This approach emphasizes an economy of means and an ecological sensibility, proposing a form of comfort based on adaptability rather than accumulation.
Programmed Surface questions how living structures can respond to changing urban rhythms and reconsiders the values embedded in the built environment.
